Bethnal Green is only minutes from the City of London but it has a history all of its own. This virtual tour will begin with its founding by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago, by “going down the Roman”. Jumping forwards to the 17th Century, Bethnal Green had developed into the home of the rich and well-to-do. A very different place to what it was to become in later years.
It’s an area rich with stories to uncover. Some of these will include world famous boxers, infamous gangsters (including the notorious Kray Twins) and a Bloody Bishop. It was also once home to fascist organisations, attempting to rule the area with a iron fist. These confrontations would result in some of the worst riots seen in London. But it’s not all violence – we have some intrigue as well as we learn the true story of The Blind Beggar and hear exactly what’s so strange about the Barmy Park.
This 75 minute virtual tour will be brought to you by East London on Foot, a group of guides with a shared passion for London’s vibrant, ever changing East End. The tour will be hosted by Daniella King.
