Neighbourhood Schools

Spring - Summer 2022

Our Neighbourhood Schools project offers a range of opportunities for Schools in Tower Hamlets to engage with musical experiences which inspire and enable cultural learning

Spitalfields Music’s relationships with local schools have been built across decades. We take great pride in being part of the lives of generations of children and families past, present and future.

Our Neighbourhood Schools programme builds partnerships with primary schools in Tower Hamlets,  collaborating with teachers to plan workshops and projects that support creative pathways tailored to school strategic objectives, PSHE themes, and cross-curricular links.

Music and Mindfulness Project

This year’s Music and Mindfulness project follows on from last years Island of the Self project, which was a creative music and mindfulness project which took place in two of our Neighbourhood Schools, with award-winning ensemble Engines Orchestra , music and wellness experts Mindful Music,  and composer and educator Raph Clarkson. The project was based on the concept of the Island of the Self – a pace to go when we experience difficult emotions – and highlighted the importance of mindful practice to help children with their everyday life in school.

This year’s project visits each of the nine Neighbourhood Schools and is led by musicians and wellness experts Martha Wright, Raph Clarkson and Joe Holtaway. The aim of the project is to introduce and explore different techniques for children to maintain wellbeing and resilience in a world that has often seemed insecure to them over the past couple of years. Over the course of a workshop, each school will explore mindfulness and wellbeing using a mixture of mindfulness methodologies, mini meditations and singing.

Renard Ensemble: Royal Academy of Music Fellows KS2 Assembly Performances in partnership with the Royal Academy of Music Open Academy

An opportunity for our Neighbourhood Schools to experience an interactive performance given by an exceptional group of musicians in their own school!

Founded in 2018 by musicians from the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School, Ensemble Renard are an exciting young wind quintet pushing the boundaries of wind chamber music. After less than six months of playing together, Ensemble Renard won the Royal Academy of Music’s Nicholas Blake Prize for wind chamber music, and from there have gone on to give regular recitals and workshops across the country, to much acclaim.

As Royal Academy Fellows, they have been working with Open Academy workshop leaders to produce an interactive performance for primary school students, and they are very excited to be visiting six Tower Hamlets primary schools in the Summer term of 2022.

The Neighbourhood Schools project is generously supported by HM Government’s Culture Recovery Fund, The Samuel Gardner Trust, The SHM Foundation, The Derek Shuttleworth Trust, and individual donors.
