On a sweltering day in the summer of 2020, Jon Jacob, writer and podcaster, S. I. Martin, historian and writer, and Sarah Gee, our Chief Executive, walked the streets of Spitalfields, learning about the history of Black lives and culture in East London. They recorded their experience and have made it available as an audio tour. To listen to the podcast, which includes music by the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, click on the box below. We’ve also included a map of the locations visited, in case you’d like to do the walk yourself! Alongside this, you’ll find an article written by S. I. Martin himself, taking us through the Black history of Spitalfields. We hope you enjoy!

With great thanks to the City of London Corporation, we were able to commission and create the resources found on this page. The funds were originally intended for a series of walking tours in-person, however, due to Covid-19 restrictions, these could not take place as planned. We hope the resources created will serve as a timeless opportunity for wider audiences to enjoy exploring the Black history of Spitalfields and beyond.
