La Nuova Musica
David Bates director
Handel Israel in Egypt
In the first of their Associate Artist performances, early music ensemble La Nuova Musica bring Handel’s choral masterpiece Israel in Egypt to the stunning surroundings of Hawksmoor’s Christ Church Spitalfields.
Although initially perplexing audiences, the work has developed a lasting reputation as Handel reworked his score over nearly 20 years. Adding operatic flourishes to exceptional effects for choir and orchestra, he artfully tells the story of the ten plagues that fell on biblical Egypt and forced the release of the Israelites from slavery.
La Nuova Musica bring their characteristic energy and precision to present a compelling interpretation of this much-loved work.
