Purcell Dido & Aeneas

Henry Purcell’s only complete opera, Dido & Aeneas, is one of his most alluring works with an enduring appeal. Taking inspiration from classical mythology, it tells a story of love and abandonment, as Dido, legendary Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, a Trojan prince fall in love only to be cruelly separated, leaving a heartbroken Dido whose sorrow is embodied in the climatic and heart-wrenching Dido’s Lament.

Spitalfields Music newcomers, the Armonico Consort are joined by soprano Elin Manahan Thomas for their festival debut in this semi-staged performance.

Approximate running time: 50 minutes
