Following on from the success of our secondary school Big Sing, which takes place in Tower Hamlets secondary schools each year, we have expanded the project into primary schools, devising a project which follows the same overarching aims but is tailored to a younger age range. The Primary Big Sing comprises two discrete but linked projects, one taking place in the Autumn term of 2022 and one in the Spring term of 2023. Each Big Sing involves with up to 250 KS2 children from primary schools who come together to sing and make music across a series of four massed rehearsal sessions.
Students and their teachers work with experienced vocal leaders Naveen Arles and Leanne Sedin to learn and perform varied repertoire that explores the power of singing together, and the associated benefits with wellbeing, a common thread running through this year’s Learning & Participation work. The project includes an INSET and resources for teaching staff to support the learning of songs and culminates in a public massed singing performance. Individual coaching sessions are also available at school between massed rehearsals, led by our fantastic Trainee Music Leaders and NewYVC Young Artists.
