Dr Steven Berryman is an arts and cultural educator contributing widely to music education. He is a Past President of the Chartered College of Teaching (2022–2024) and current Senior Deputy Head at Sir William Perkins’s School, and holds a variety of non-executive director roles, including school governance. Steven is also an Industry Champion for the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre. He has contributed widely to educational press, expert roundtables, examining and as an arts education practitioner, including work as a composer; recent work includes projects with the Royal Ballet and Opera, London Philharmonic Orchestra, NMC Recordings and Ofqual. Steven was a member of the DFE/DCMS expert panel to refresh the National Plan for Music Education.

Furthest you’ve been from home?
I wrote some music for a play that was part of a international festival in Rio de Janeiro; I didn’t know I would been visiting Brazil for the performances until the night before the flights… A remarkable place, and I subsequently visited again to spend the week in São Paulo.
A fun fact…
I have a twin brother. Whilst we are identical we do look a bit different these days but he looks enough like me for people to have a double-take. We went to the same university and we had many instances of mistaken identity and disbelief from fellow students when we professed to be a twin. We were rarely believed until we were seen together. The surprise and shock was always amusing!
