“The boys were singing their songs outside music lessons (on the bus)!”

– Class teacher, Cherry Trees School (2019 project feedback)

Throughout the year, Spitalfields Music runs an extensive programme in the East End, offering opportunities for people of all ages to engage with music. In our 250 workshops each year, 95 % of participants are from within the borough, and speak over 50 different languages. 85% of our activity is free.

In 2019 we celebrated 30 years of our award-winning Learning & Participation work.

Some highlights of our work in the community include:

Neighbourhood Schools – working with pupils, teachers and parents to put music at the heart of school life for a group of four mainstream schools and two Special Educational Needs Schools in Tower Hamlets, enhancing learning and increasing aspirations.

Out of school activity – we work with young people outside of school, including Soundbox, an inclusive music ensemble for disabled and non-disabled young people aged 11+. Soundbox brings young people of all backgrounds and abilities together to make and create music. The project is delivered in partnership with Tower Hamlets Arts & Music Education Service (THAMES) and Drake Music.

Adults – We offer local people the chance to participate in transformative, creative music making, improving well being and bringing people together. Current projects include Creative Encounters, a three-year programme of multi-arts work in dementia care homes across East London.
