The Sixteen: A Pilgrim’s Solace
Recognised as one of the world's finest ensembles, this is your rare opportunity to experience the musical brilliance of Harry Christophers and The Sixteen up close and personal, in the intimate settings of early Georgian private residences on and around Fournier Street.
The Huguenot silk-weaver houses of Spitalfields date back to the late 17th century, and this evening’s event presents the opportunity to explore this fascinating aspect of Spitalfields’ history, as you journey from house to house, with miniature drawing room performances in each. Music includes medieval sacred songs, songs of William Cornysh, a selection of lute songs by John Dowland with the evening rounding up with an ensemble performance of Dowland’s A Pilgrim’s Solace, written in 1612.

Through sharing a common desire to shed new light on standard repertoire and bring neglected gems to the fore, La Nuova Musica perform John Blow’s Venus & Adonis in Shoreditch’s new and exciting cross-platform arts venue, the Village Underground.
'...this new group of young performers brings a sense of freshness and joy to even the most familiar music. Quite captivating!' John Rutter

Rumpelstiltskin - Birmingham Contemporary Music Group
Following a critically acclaimed world premiere in November, Rumpelstiltskin comes to London. David Sawer and Richard Jones create a new fable for our times, based on the Grimms’ well known tale and told through dance, music and action alone. Sawer delivers a score of glittering brilliance and rhythmic energy to express the story’s themes of transformation, ritual and revelation while Olivier and Tony Award-winning Jones and Laing create a tableau of moving pictures to bring Rumpelstiltskin to thrilling new life.
'...Sawer’s score is entrancing...it is dark, lean and jagged, embracing both eerie menace and seductive charm.' The Daily Telegraph
Friday 11 June 6.30pm & 9.00pm
Brother Quay: Street of Crocodiles
London Contemporary Orchestra make their Spitalfields Music debut as they showcase three unique musical mavericks. Radical filmmakers the Brothers Quay's Street of Crocodiles, which inhabits their characteristically nightmarish world, is accompanied by Lech Jankowski's revised score. Parallel worlds are also the theme of Claude Vivier's Zipangu, referencing the island that Kubla Khan sought to conquer, and which to the composer represents 'the symbol of immeasurable wealth, lying just out of reach.' Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No. 1 skilfully fuses the disparate styles of baroque, modern and the banal into an essay on the subversion of conventions, constantly wrong-footing the listener.
Friday 25 June 8.30pm
James Weeks presents a Chris Newman Portrait
An evening of music, visual art and video from the Berlin based cross-platform artist Chris Newman in the exciting new arts venue, the Rag Factory.
'Chris Newman is one of Britain's great all-round artistic talents, famous for his outrageous and hilarious songs, but just as important for his radical take on composition and for his work in the visual arts such as painting and video. Now resident in Berlin, Newman is seldom seen or heard in his native country and we are delighted to welcome him back, together with his recital partner Michael Finnissy and other close collaborators, for an evening of his music, paintings and videos. A special event and not to be missed.’ James Weeks
The evening is split into two performances, with the opportunity to view an exhbition of Newman's visual art in between. The early evening performance will include Newman’s instrumental and piano music, with a premiere of his new piano trio by contemporary ensemble Kürbis. The later evening performance will include Chris Newman’s vivid cabaret-style songs, alongside Michael Finnissy with the premiere of his new cycle Format.
